Question: I cannot see captions on the Television Monitor.

Answer:

1)     Do you see any video at all on your TV?  If not, then you probably have connected the video cables incorrectly.  Please visit the Video Connections page and make sure that you have everything connected correctly.
NOTE: Just because you can see video does not necessarily mean that all your video connections are correct!  It is a good idea to review the Video Connections page and make sure that you have connected everything correctly.

2)     If you are seeing video, and you have verified that your video connections are correct, but you are not seeing captions, open the CPC CaptionMaker. In the menu, go to Caption -> Device, and see which encoder you have selected.  Is the encoder that is selected the same as the encoder that you have?  If it is not, then select the correct encoder.  Go to Caption -> Initialize Device and attempt to output captions again.

3)   If you  have the correct encoder selected, open demo.cap from the samples folder.  Select a caption and press the plus(+) key, while watching the Encoder for a light to turn on.  When you hit the plus(+) key,

For Ultech InsertaCap/DisplayCap
The “RS232” light on the front of the encoder should light up (green color: good data; amber color: bad data) to indicate that the encoder is receiving data.  If the RS232 light is lit and is green, but you are not receiving captions, then there is a problem with the
Video Connections

If the light is lit but is amber, then the encoder's settings (e.g.: Baud Rate/Data Bits/Parity) are conflicting with the settings in the program.  In the CaptionMaker program, go to Caption » Device, then click Configure.  Click Restore Defaults and attempt to press the plus key again.  If you do not see captions and the light is still amber, you will have to fix the settings inside the encoder.

Press the Enter key on the front of the Insertacap. (You must have to have the Decoder Out connected to the video monitor to see the Set Up screen). Use the on-screen menu to match the encoder's settings to the default settings in the CaptionMaker Device Configuration menu.  Consult the Ultech Insertacap manual for help on changing the settings.

     The default setting are:
Decoder Output:    CC1 Line 21
Field 1:
Encode
Field 2:           Transparent

Communications
:    9600, N, 8, 1

For Link PCE-845/PDR-885/PDE-890
The “Serial Data” light should light up to indicate that the encoder is receiving data.  If you are receiving any data through the COM port, then the Serial Data light should turn green.  If the light turns green, then you must look to the "Pass Through" and "Test" lights.

If the "Pass Through" and "Test" lights are blinking red, then that means that the encoder's settings (e.g. Baud Rate/Data Bits/Parity) are conflicting with the settings in the CaptionMaker software.  In the CaptionMaker software, go to Caption » Device, then click Configure. Click Restore Defaults and attempt to press the plus key again.  If you do not see captions and the "Pass Through" and "Test" lights are still blinking red, you will need to fix the settings inside the encoder using the dip switches to match all settings to the default settings in the CaptionMaker Caption » Device » Configuration menu.  Consult the Link Encoder's manual for help on changing the settings within the encoder.

4)  If you are NOT getting any light on your encoder when you press the plus key, then the encoder is not connected correctly to the computer.  Make sure that the encoder is connected to COM1, and that the COM1 is selected as the correct port for the Encoder to use in the Caption Device Configuration menu.  If you are sure that it is connected correctly, and it still isn't working, then you have a bad serial cable.  Replace the serial cable and try again.
