The CPC-VChip Software The broadcaster or program producer uses the CPC-VChip
software to insert V-Chip ratings onto line 21 of the video using a closed
caption encoder. The software can also insert other information such as the
program name, station ID, etc. When a home viewer watches a program with V-Chip
information, the V-Chip in their television reads the V-Chip rating information,
and either displays the program with the rating on the screen; or blocks out the
program if the V-Chip rating exceeds the rating the home television set is
programmed to allow. Since many television sets do not have V-Chips,
the software is also capable of simultaneously sending out program rating
information as a viewable icon. An example of multiple ratings for a
single program |
