The e-Captioning Workflow
 |
1. upload a small proxy video file
2.
CPC transcribes (unless you provide the
transcript) & creates caption/subtitle files
for your video file
3. a time stamped caption/subtitle file
will be emailed to you and you will embed the captions to your video
yourself.
4. or, CPC
will embed the captions/subtiles to your video.
e-Captioning can be used for
virtually all captioning tasks. This
includes HD/SD tape, DVD, all web
formats & Blu-ray subtitles.

General Workflow
What You Will Need The first thing
you need in order to get something closed captioned is a
transcript. There are several ways to create one, and CPC
also offers a transcription service. Check
rates for details. You will also need a proxy movie - a small video such as Quicktime (H.264 320x240) is sufficient to make caption files.
Check proxy_video for
details.
Once CPC has both these items, we can start the closed captioning process.
What You Get From us
After the captioning process is complete, we will email you a small
.zip file that, when unzipped, will be a file needed for
your specific workflow. see below which fits your
workflow.
Other Options Repurposing Captions It is also possible for CPC to extract closed captions from video and repurpose them by encoding to another format.
Physical Media While e-Captioning allows you to keep quality control in-house and makes it
unnecessary to mail tapes, we understand this may not work for everyone. If it suits your workflow we can also work with a tapes you send us and then mail you back a new tape with closed captions. We can do this with every format from DVD to BetaSP.
1. NLE (SD) Workflow CPC's NLE workflow for professional SD video uses the 8-bit Uncompressed 720x486 codec and is compatible with most NLEs (FCP, Avid, Premiere Pro, etc).
Typically this workflow is used by someone who will output their SD master (e.g., Beta SP, Digibeta) from their non-linear editing system via SDI or analog (component, composite, etc.).
What You Will Need
See the section above for General Workflow.
What You Get From us
After the captioning process is complete, we will email you a small .zip file that, when unzipped, will be an 8-bit uncompressed video file. This is your Black Movie.
A Black Movie is a full-frame 720x486 video of just the caption information, which appears at the top of the frame as white dotted lines.
How to Use The Black Movie The Black Movie can be put directly into your NLE timeline. Once it is lined up, simply crop it 98% from the bottom and it is ready for output.
Animation codec with alpha channel is also available for those customers who don't want use the cropping method, although NLEs typically cannot play Animation in realtime.
2. NLE (HD) Workflow
CPC's NLE workflow for professional HD video uses one
of two basic workflows. If you or your post facility
uses Final Cut Pro and has a AJA Kona card (3, LHi, LHe,
LSe) or a Matrox MXO2, you can use our eCaptioning
service to create your HD Captions (608/708).
Typically this workflow is used by someone who will
output their HD master (e.g. HDCAM, HDCAM SR) from their
non-linear editing system via HD-SDI.
What You Will Need
See the section above for General Workflow. What You Get From us
After the captioning process is complete, we will email
you a small .zip file that, when unzipped, will be a
caption file tailored to your specific NLE.
How To Use The Caption File Your
caption file works in one of two ways: -AJA
Workflow: The caption file is a type of Quicktime
Reference that is selected in Final Cut Pro's Edit to
Tape window, under the Mastering Settings tab.
-Matrox
Workflow: The caption file is an audio file that is
placed on track eight of the timeline.
In both
cases you should also set your hardware preferences in
System Preferences under the Apple Menu. See our
tutorials page for more details on these workflows.
3. DVD/Blu-ray Workflow
CPC's cutting edge software is able to subtitle and
closed caption both DVD and Blu-ray. Blu-ray
inherently does not support captions, but CPC supports
Blu-ray subtitles (SDH).
What You Will
Need
See the section above for General Workflow.
What You Get From Us After the
captioning process is complete, we will email you a
small caption or subtitle file.
How To
Use The Caption File Depending on your
workflow, the caption file may be used in many different
ways. CPC will help you implement the captions and
subtitle quickly and painlessly.
4. Webcast Workflow
CPC's cutting edge software is able to closed caption
dozens of formats, and is the first software to support
closed captions for Flash, YouTube, Windows Media, Real,
iTunes, Quicktime, Podcast and of course, iPhone.

5. DV WorkflowWhen we say DV we mean the
specification for NTSC DV video at 720x480. This could be
video recorded on a DV tape, or a movie file using the DV
codec. Being a standard definition codec, DV supports 608
closed captions on Line 21 which are decoded by your
television.
What You Will Need
See the section above for General Workflow.
We will send you a small program called CapEncode to
create a proxy movie and a "Signature File" for your
video. The proxy movie will act as a reference while we
are formatting and timing your captions, and the Signature
File is used as an ID for your video.
What
You Get From us After the captioning process
is complete, we will email you a caption file, and a new
Signature File. CapEncode will encode captions to your
original DV video using these files. Once it is encoded,
you can lay off your closed captioned video file to tape.
