MacCaption V3.5

Highlights of this version

  • MacCaption compiled as a Universal binary. Now MacCaption runs on Intel based Macintosh computers too.
  • Batch processing to export captions/subtitles of multiple files. (File >> Batch...) -User can select multiple source files, choose operations to perform on those source files, and output files to a specific directory.
  • Import and Export for Multiple Language.
        -User goes though timing process with English text and timestamps the beginning of each sentence or dialogue
         using their own judgment.  A text file containing these "queue points" is sent to the translator who translates
         each portion of text.  That translated file is then imported into MacCaption where the user performs a Fill-In Time Code operation (TimeCode >> Fill-In All Caption Times) to fill in the times between queue points.
  • Support for Ultech DV2000/3000 subtitle hardware

  • MPEG2 closed caption encoding and decoding for Vela MPEG hardware.

  • In subtitle mode it does not properly display the immediate background around the subtitle text properly for non standard sized imported movies but standard sized (720x480, 720x486 and 720x576) movies work fine. Open captions properly display in non standard sized movies when these movies are used as proxy movies in MacCaption.

  • Can handle subtitles and DVD subtitle graphics for any size video from 320x240 to 1920x1080. PAL subtitles are now positioned properly at the bottom of the image. If you single click in the movie window you can use the arrow keys as well as 't', 'b', 'l' and 'r' to move a subtitle. Holding the shift key down moves a subtitle further.

  • Multi language subtitles. You can have both English and Spanish subtitles on the same video by creating time stamped files in each language.

This will fix the problem matching time code to exported files for DVD and others. The difference of time codes in one hour video is 00:00:03:18 between DF and NDF time codes.

Subtitling capability for all QuickTime movies
You can add subtitles to most movies that can be displayed by MacCaption.  Video can be of any size 320x240 to 720x480. Click here for details.

Apple XML file export for subtitling
Apple's Final Cut Pro HD supports exporting and importing an XML Interchange Format file. MacCaption exports Apple's XML subtitle specification so that subtitles can be easily transferred from MacCaption to Final Cut Pro. In MacCaption use File > Export > Apple XML Interchange Format to export an Apple XML file. In Final Cut Pro use File > Import > XML to read the subtitles into your FCP project.

Support for Windows Media Player .asx file generation
MacCaption will generate Windows Media Player files for use on a Windows PC. In MacCaption use Files > Export > Windows Media Player and choose "Version 6", "Version 7, 8, 9, 10" or "Book". The later two selections allow the choice of creating a stand alone Windows Media Player ".asx" file or an Internet Explorer Windows Media Player ".html" file.

Automatic Synchronization of Audio with TC
10 Apr 04 - MacCaption software can now automatically break and accurately time closed captions at the click of button. There is a service fee for this function. This automates the labor-intensive job of having a captioner listen to the audio, manually break the text into captions, and then synchronize the captions with the dialogue.

With CaptionSync automated captioning software from Automatic Sync Technologies, the captioner connects to the internet and uploads the script and the corresponding audio file to a file server. Within minutes, a time stamped script file will be displayed on the computer.

Movie Control

Time Stamp Reaction Time
6 Mar 04 - Added user settable AutoSync frame correction to preferences.

To compensate for the reaction time for time stamping, go to the MacCaption > Preferences menu. Then click on User Time Stamp Frame Adjustment. Typically, the human reaction time is about 10 to 15 frames. You may choose a number between 10 and 15 and see how the captions are synched to audio when you do AutoSync.
